Listen To: Elmo Comes For Christmas

Christmas is a time when family and friends come to visit. The Baltimore area is fortunate to have friends like Elmo and Kevin Clash. They come home to visit family and friends every Christmas. Elmo is always treated like a special friend. He has even been invited to help light the Washington Monument in Mount Vernon.

Elmo says Christmas is always special to him because he not only gets to visit with his friends from Sesame Street but he gets to visit with his family and friends in the Baltimore area as well, especially at the Inner Harbor.

Kevin Clash is the man behind the Muppet. Kevin was born and raised in Turner Station, a suburb of Baltimore. He is also a graduate of Dundalk Senior High School.

Kevin recalls the days leading up to Christmas when his mom and dad would try to hide the family gifts. It was a challenge for Kevin and his brother and sisters to try to find the gifts but they rarely did.

Once Kevin became a puppeteer, he recalls performing at various locations in the Baltimore area around the holidays like Brager Gutman's Department Store downtown.

Kevin's life changed in 1985 when he began performing Elmo. Who can forget the year Tickle Me Elmo was the hot Christmas gift? Kevin says Fischer Price, the creator of the Elmo doll, gave him a bunch of dolls as gifts for him to give away to family and friends that Christmas.

Elmo says Merry Christmas to all!
