Listen To: Pocomoke City Christmas Parade

It's a cut of Americana on the MARVA! (the Delmarva Peninsula) The annual Pocomoke City Christmas Parade. Each first Monday night in December more than 10,000 people cram the sidewalks along Market Street in downtown Pocomoke City, Maryland for this annual event.

It all started in 1972 with Santa and a fire truck. Now the three hour parade attracts high school bands and floats from all over Delmarva as well as Smith Island and beyond. It is considered the largest night time parade in Maryland.

One of the original organizers of the parade, Roger Mason, says ''there is a certain romance and excitement about a night time parade. The cool weather tends to make it feel a little bit more like Christmas.''

The ''locals'' look forward to it each year because it symbolizes how things in Pocomoke City tend to be very local and not rushed. The attitude around Christmas is ''one day at a time''

Pocomoke City Mayor Mike McDermott says ''This is a working city. The folks that are here really do know each other. A lot of the folks are really interested in each other and what's going on.''
