Listen To: An East Baltimore Christmas - Polish Style

There must be hundreds of holiday well-wishers gathered in the streets of Fells Point in East Baltimore each December 23 rd . It's an East Baltimore Christmas - Polish style. They all meet at 7pm outside the Polish Home Club on South Broadway. Musicians pile into a cart that is pulled by a truck, a tribute to an old Polish custom where horse-drawn carts went through the villages of Poland stopping at all the churches to sing Christmas carols. Organizer Mary Ann Frederick says they enjoy bringing that tradition to Baltimore .

Many of those who attend have been showing up for at least 25years. One woman told Christmas In Maryland ''we have fun, we sing and we see the same people year after year. It's a nice tradition!''

As the parade of holiday caroling winds through the streets of Fells Point, people will look out their windows or stand on their stoops to wave. The procession is usually met with cheers from passers-by. People in taverns and restaurants will come outdoors to listen and watch as the carolers make their way through the streets. Once the carolers hit most of the streets of Fells Point they return to the Polish Home Club for libations and more music.

However, the night would not be complete without a stop at Ray and Gloria Weber's house on South Chester Street . They own Weber's Funeral Home and each year they welcome hundreds of people through their front door for a little holiday cheer. Gloria Weber says originally, following Midnight Mass at Holy Rosary Church across the street, they would hold an open house with champagne and scrambled eggs. Today their tradition continues each December 23. Gloria says ''We love people, we love people in this house.'' It is the Webers' hope that their daughter will carry on the tradition.
